a few of my occult related favorites:

        The Dark Chrystal
3 John Waters movies: Pink Flamingoes, Multiple Maniacs and A Dirty Shame
Waking Life contains thematic content relevant to shamanic initiation
Slacker. a couple of the vignettes contain rather obvious occult references, & *all the vignettes are interconnected* to form the story of a day
Meshes of the Afternoon, as well as Maya Deren's ethnographic film footage on Vodou in Haiti
        Martin (my favorite vampire movie)
        The Wizard of Oz
        Dances Sacred & Profane
        Carnival of Souls
        El Topo
        Prospero's Books
        Fantasia
most any Kenneth Anger movie. i like Scorpio Rising & have yet to see his magnum opus Lucifer Rising.

i'll return to this topic later.

I couldn't stand Pi. I watched years later after studying Kabbalah thinking maybe I missed something the first time around but I still hated it. heh.

Hellboy is quite well incorporated into real life occult ww2 info + Batboy!
Golgotha-Alabama is a indie film about some magick
ya know I like Lord of Illusions too
I also like conpiracy movies like "Documentaries" on magic most are typical "It's all satanic" but anything good is antithetical to restriction:) so i gleen nuggets of wisdom there
Witchcraft Throughout The Ages , get the burroughs version yow!
How to Operate your Brain-tangentally but chaostic for certain\1
              Simon Magus,weird little movie
Excaliber- i like morgan le fay and merlins battles and the imagery (very tarot)
  • Re: Occult related movie reccomendation list

"Mr Vampire" (for Taoist shamanist magic)

"Black Robe" - Amer-indian stuff - the shaman in it is cool.

and beyond any doubt...one of the best films ever imo (even though its more to do with paganism than magic)... "THE WICKER MAN"

I'll add "Holy Smoke" for good measure (kinda about the Sanyassin Cult)

I like these films because the topic of magic or belief is not overblown or warped into a suspense or horror film.
I'm gonna join Saul in being a whiner...:) I hate it when filmakers focus on juvenile forms of satanism and call it magick.

Man I love Donnie Darko - that is an intensely magical film.

Most of the flicks mentioned are pretty good, as far as occult is concerned.
My recommendation is surprisingly not mentioned anywhere:

    "THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU"

It's a damned cool flick, with all the "beast people" and the little guy who plays piano for the doctor. The Law that is recited in the movie, that governs the doctor's creations, is taken from an old ritual practised by the Illuminati and in certain Masonic lodges in Europe, later practised in a similar version by the O.T.O under Crowley's administration.

    Check it out.

besides most of the above, I'd also recommend:

Geoges Melies - illusionist turned father of fantasy films (made between 1896 & 1912), some of which are on collections (his most famous is "LE VOYAGE DANS LA LUNE", he also did several Faust films, and others with himself as Mephistopheles or Satan)

THE MAGICIAN (silent film with Paul Wegener from THE GOLEM films as a Crowley-type)
Ingmar Bergman's THE SEVENTH SEAL and THE MAGICIAN
          MACBETH (Welles' and Polanski's)
          BURN, WITCH, BURN
CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS
          CAT PEOPLE ('42 and '82)
TO THE DEVIL...A DAUGHTER (Hammer's followup to THE DEVIL RIDES OUT mentioned above)
animator Harry Smith (made films from '40's to '80), used lots of magical symbolism, especially Kabbalah
Matthew Barney's CREMASTER series (tho I've so far only managed to see #3, which is actually the 5th one, which was about Freemasonry)
Jean Cocteau's BLOOD OF A POET, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, ORPHEUS, and THE TESTAMENT OF ORPHEUS (supposedly he was for a time head of the Rosy Cross)
FAUST (Murnau's and Svankmajer's) and DOCTOR FAUSTUS (Richard Burton doing Marlowe)
          DEF BY TEMPTATION
          THE BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN
werewolves: THE WEREWOLF OF LONDON, THE WOLF MAN, I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF, THE CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF, THE BOY WHO CRIED WEREWOLF, THE HOWLING (but NONE of the sequels), AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, A COMPANY OF WOLVES, FULL ECLIPSE, DOG SOLDIERS, and most of Spanish star Paul Naschy's series ('67-'83) are fun
vampires: too many to mention all (I like even some of the bad ones, especially Dracula), but on top are NOSFERATU (Murnau's and Herzog's), DRACULA'S DAUGHTER, KISS OF THE VAMPIRE, THE BODY BENEATH, HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS, DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS, THE BLOOD SPATTERED BRIDE, DEATHDREAM, THE LEGENDARY CURSE OF LEMORA, MARTIN, NEAR DARK, TALE OF A VAMPIRE, NADJA, THE ADDICTION, HABIT, SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE
Bunuel & Dali's UN CHIEN ANDALOU
          HELLRAISER & HELLBOUND Hellraiser 2
THE DEVIL'S RAIN (for silly fun)
Craig Baldwin's SPECTRES OF THE SPECTRUM
Guy Maddin's TWILIGHT OF THE ICE NYMPHS
Derek Jarman's version of THE TEMPEST
ALL THAT MONEY CAN BUY (a.k.a. THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER)
the Amicus omnibus series: DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS, TORTURE GARDEN, THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD, TALES FROM THE CRYPT, THE VAULT OF HORROR
Vincent Price in THE HAUNTED PALACE (Poe title, but Lovecraft story), CRY OF THE BANSHEE, and both Dr. Phibes films
          THE DUNWICH HORROR
          ANGEL HEART
          THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW
          PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE
THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY ('45)
Lon Chaney as THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA ('25)

tv series: "DARK SHADOWS" ('60's & '90's), "ROD SERLING'S NIGHT GALLERY", "TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE", "AMERICAN GOTHIC", "BRIMSTONE"

I think one of Maya Deren's films was mentioned above, but ANY of her films have certain Occult sensibilities (she went Haiti to film Voodoo, and ended up staying, getting fully immersed)

          okay, I'm a film-geek...I'll quit...for now...mwahahahahahahahaha...

One of my favorite lines of all times comes from Emerald Forest, (by John Boorman, btw).

Our protagonist is looking for native guides, none volunteer, the chief is apologetic. So our boy asks why the chief doesn't just order someone to help if he's the chief. And the chief responds:

"If I ask a man to do what he does not want to do, then I am no longer chief."

        I love that.

Unfortunately, have never seen EMERALD FOREST - strange, too, since I love Boorman's EXCALIBUR, ZARDOZ, & others (even, 'cause it's sooooo bad, EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC).

Finally saw Kenneth Anger's "INVOCATION OF MY DEMON BROTHER" and "LUCIFER RISING", both are marvelous. I had seen others by him, like "SCORPIO RISING", before, but these 2 (which are available on one dvd) are highly commendable.

      • Re: Occult related movie reccomendation list

        occult...

that which is hidden from the eye..

f for fake is a wonderful little series of bizarre philisophical turns of mind around the idea of hoaxes.

i particularly find the thought line around expertise pointful.

can you tell when it is a fake and when it's not?

it's like the story about the crossroads where you meet the guy who's supposed to direct you to a town, only he may be from a town of people who always lie.. so you have to know the specific questions that you are trying to ask.

there are many ideas turning around in this movie, and, like bulwer-lytton, if you are looking for the ideas, you will certainly find them because they are being tossed around all over the place.

F is for fake .... is the ESSENCE of occult

        occult = hidden knowledge

the nature of truth, as any practitioner of occult science ideally knows,
        requires the understanding of lies.

How reality is formed by words, perception, "reality vs imagination"
is the essence of F is for Fake. The fact that it plays up the difference between
basic stage magic in realtionship to the true magic of shifting perception and therefore one's
reality all the while commenting on the role of media and film and the very film you are watching all the while makes it one of the greatest achievements (if basically a fairly good film) on the subject of the occult.
        cheers

a very interesting movie which is true to what magick really looks like. Besides the Very Cute Julie Delame. I'd watch it a thousand times just for her. lol
But really an interesting and visually stunning piece.

almost all films of bunuel - they are absolutely not declared magick,
but i think they are - that surrealistic dream stuff, completely normal situations
within completely strange plots or otherwise round and so on. Standard action
with very strange sidekicks exploding into, but no one even notes them, and so
on and so on ... great :)
Oh, btw.: not trying to advertise splatter movies, but films like "house by the cemetery"
fit very good in my above described pattern. Either one can described it as total crap
or as scenes from a nightmare. At least when considering how people act there.

since the last post on this old thread, i have seen Kenneth Anger's movie Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome...wonderfull! in fact, try this idea for a double feature & a short: watch The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, immediately followed by Anger's 6-minute short Puce Moment, immediately followed by Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome, which, in terms of length, i think qualifies as a featurette. why watch these films in this order? well, to begin with, charcters from the first 2 appear in the third. :)
finally..last night i saw Alejandro Jodorowsky's movie The Holy Mountain, about an alchemist who leads a mountain climbing expedition. that movie's a *royal mindfuck*!

I would add two films by underground director JIM VANBEBBER from my home town, Dayton, OH. (he directed SKINNY PUPPY'S video for SPASMOLYTIC btw):

    MY SWEET SATAN

    CHARLIE'S FAMILY

these two films are based on historical events and CHARLIES FAMILY is one of the goriest portrayals of the manson cult killings out there. Every stab wound documented. The only thing not in the film is the evisceration of a pregnant Sharon Tate. I guess his producers had to draw the line somewhere.

Jarman's 'TEMPEST" plucks the heart strings of my wildest imagination. Though it does not include all of Shakespeare's text, Jarman is faithful to the magickal essence of the story and directs it with the quirky theatricality he is known for. For me, it is his masterpiece. The riveting performances of Heathcote Williams (Prospero), Toyah Willcox (Miranda) and Jack Birkett (Caliban) embody the play's mysticism like a rosy cross submerged in the blood of the dying gods they represent.

BARAKA (if the shamanistic, tribal ritual elements are counting)

SATYRICON (on the same Olympian Myth idea)

oh yeah, how about BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS, hahaha
    • Re: Occult related movie reccomendation list

So nobody has yet mentioned the Evil Dead movies, or am I just missing it? You know, where he reads from the Necronimicon, and gets possessed and ultimately dragged back in time to ancient Sumer?
I think 'Magnolia' is very occult, and I similarly like this new HBO show, 'John From Cincinnati'.
And if you're going to bring in 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks' (and thank you for doing so), then you may as well include 'Escape to Witch mountain', and it's sequel. Not to mention that Mary Poppins is a witch, and her friend Bert is actually Papa Legba, guardian of the crossroads (hook him up with some change and he'll draw you a magic sidewalk picture to send you on a little trip).
I haven't seen the new Fantastic Four movie yet, but in any case, the FF are Earth, Air, Fire, and Water,, the Silver Surfer is Spirit, and Galactus represents The Void.
I think most if not all Cronenberg movies are occult. They're all about small groups of people who get tuned in to some reality-bending thing or idea, throw themselves into it full-throttle, quickly develop ill-conceived, ad-hoc hierarchies, and eventually succumb to schemes for power and mutual betrayal. Does that sound occult to anyone else, or is it just me?
'The Matrix' is a story about Initiation, 'Blade Runner' questions the human monopoly on reality.
On the new 'Battlestar Galactica', the humans are Pagans, descended from Apollo and Diana, et.al, while the Cylons are monotheist, believing each creature is a part of God's Plan, and the humans are basically rebellious or malfunctioning cogs. Another great SciFi show was Lexx, where the three main characters were personifications of Sex and Death, and a fragile human Ego suspended helplessly between them.
'What Dreams May Come' is a brilliant film about how your attitude creates your reality, and I think anyone practicing the Black Arts should watch the 1998 comedy 'Mystery Men'.
Oh, and 'Blue Velvet', about the thin veneer separating our comfort zone from The Outside World.
I'm sure Charlie Kaufman movies have a lot to say to magickians as well, but I can't claim to know what that might be (yet).
  • Re: Occult related movie reccomendation list

Most of the following films mess with ideas of reality and consciousness, not really about magick, but people seem to be disagreeing on the definition of occult and I think they can all by deemed occult by at least some of your definitions. They're all worth a watch, anyway:
    Dark City
    The Nines
    Existenz
    Videodrome
    Lost Highway
    Vanilla Sky
    Thirteenth Floor
    Altered States
    Being John Malkovich
    Pan's Labyrinth
    Labyrinth
Fight Club? (I dunno, maybe I'm wierd but there seems to be something magickal about MPD - It's kinda like invoking a magickal entity of one's own making - who knows, some cases could be genuine cases of possession by an external entity?)
Beetlejuice is a cool comedy occult film. I hear they're finally making films of the excellent William Gibson novel Neuromancer, and the comic Preacher (about a priest who gets possessed by a half-angel, half-demon and has the ability to use The Voice on people and make them do whatever he commands)
